TEMPE, Ariz. (AP)—Arizona Cardinals safety Kerry Rhodes(notes) went through a
limited practice on Wednesday, his first workout with the team since he was
injured in a game at Minnesota on Oct. 9.

Coach Ken Whisenhunt says Rhodes was able to go through some drills.
Whisenhunt says Rhodes’ return to game action will depend on how the player’s
left foot responds to the increased activity.

Rhodes broke a bone in his left foot in the Cardinals’ 34-10 loss to the
Vikings. Rashad Johnson(notes) and Richard Marshall(notes) have filled in during the seven
games Rhodes has missed.

The Dallas Cowboys have a few more injuries, but still nothing out of the ordinary. Wide receiver Miles Austin is still not practicing and looking like he could be doubtful for Sunday’s game. If you have Austin on your fantasy team, you might have to wait a little longer and try relying on alternative options like Dez Bryant and Laurent Robinson. This should ease the burden on the Cardinals secondary, who won’t have to worry about one of Tony Romo’s favorite targets.

          				by Kent Somers – Nov. 30, 2011 04:14 PM
The Arizona Republic

After five weeks of answering questions about his big right toe, Cardinals quarterback Kevin Kolb is ready for people to ask him about his performance in a game.

<img src="http://l.azcentral.com/imgs/icon_new_bullet_black.gif" width="10" height="10" border="0" alt=""" />Cardinals-Cowboys injury report

That might come this week against the Cowboys at University of Phoenix Stadium.

Kolb took every snap with the starters in practice on Wednesday, he said, and expects to play for the first time since suffering the injury in Baltimore on Oct. 30.

“I feel really good,” Kolb said. “Obviously, we’ll see tomorrow how it feels after a full day like that, but I have full intention of playing.”

Kolb has missed four games with a right foot injury that included turf toe, a ligament sprain and a bone bruise. He practiced on a limited basis last week but experienced soreness afterward.

“We didn’t know for sure if I could play, then you start holding back the other guy,” Kolb said. “They just made a decision to go ahead and give John (Skelton) the start, and that was probably the smartest thing to do.”

Coach Ken Whisenhunt was conservative when asked on Wednesday if he was confident Kolb would play on Sunday: “The way it’s gone this season for us with different guys, I’m not going to say anything like that today. We’ll see how it is tomorrow.”

Rounding out his game

With four punt returns for touchdowns, Patrick Peterson has proved his worth on special teams. The rookie is still developing as a cornerback, however, and especially as an offensive threat.

Peterson has participated in three offensive plays this season. On the first, the Cardinals called a timeout because of an alignment problem. On the second, Peterson didn’t get the ball.

And last week, Peterson took a snap in the Wildcat formation, only to fumble it before he ran. He recovered for no gain.

“Right when I was securing the ball into my right hand, my knee hit the tail end of the ball and that kind of popped it out,” he said. “But, man, if I had the opportunity to hang on to that ball, I believe I was going the distance.”

Coaches tried to show him evidence that the play would have been big.

“I was like ‘Trust me. I know. I know what could have happened.’ “

Peterson was named the NFC’s Special Teams Player of the Month. He had two punt returns for touchdowns in November.

Injury update

Overall, the Cardinals injury report was shorter than it has been in some time.

In addition to Kolb, tight end Rob Housler (groin) practiced fully after missing the past four games. Running back Beanie Wells (knee), cornerback Michael Adams (hamstring) and tight end Todd Heap (hamstring) were limited.

Outside linebacker Joey Porter (knee) and free safety Kerry Rhodes (foot) were out.

For the Cowboys, receiver Miles Austin (hamstring) was one of six players who did not practice.

That’s all the news for today.

On the eve of Thanksgiving, it appears that the Arizona Cardinals are closer to getting some key players back for game action. Quarterback Kevin Kolb and tight end Todd Heap, both important offseason acquisitions, participated in practice in a limited fashion. There is some optimism that they may be able to play on Sunday against the St. Louis Rams.

Kolb took about 35 to 40 percent of the snaps with the first team, according to his own estimation and also about half the snaps with the scout team. If his foot and toe respond well to the action, it will allow him more reps in practice and a likely return to game action and starting against the Rams.

In addition to Heap (hamstring), fellow tight end Rob Housler (groin) also was limited in practice. Michael Adams (hamstring) and Beanie Wells (knee) were also limited.

There were four players who did not practice. As expected, safety Kerry Rhodes (foot) and linebacker Joey Porter (knee) were out. In addition to them, tackles Brandon Keith and Jeremy Bridges did not practice. Keith is recovering from a concussion he suffered against the 49ers and Bridges was out due to non-football reasons.

The other three players on the injury report fully practiced. LaRod Stephens-Howling (shoulder) and Paris Lenon (groin) have been listed now for a couple of weeks. Darnell Dockett (groin) appeared on the list as well.

What are your opinions.

Arizona Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt spoke with some media members at Friday’s practice at team headquarters, and gave some insight into the status of some of the Cards injured players.

Running back Beanie Wells made progress in practice Friday after he took on larger work load on his sore knee, but will still be considered a game time decision. As for tight end Todd Heap’s hamstring, he is progressing as well and will join the litany of players considered as game time decisions on Sunday.

Linebacker Joey Porter, who has been dealing with a knee problem the majority of the season, is also a game time decision, though Coach Wiz elaborated on how his situation mirrors many aging players in the NFL:

”We’ve been giving him time off at practice. It depends on whether he takes a shot in the game or what happens game days. It’s indicative of a lot of older players around the league.”

Wide receivers Early Doucet (quadricep) and DeMarco Sampson (hamstring), as well as tight end Jim Dray (pectoral) are officially questionable for Sunday’s game as well in the Charm City. Safety Kerry Rhodes (foot) is out while cornerback Michael Adams (hand) is probable.

Tight end Todd Heap spent his first 10 NFL seasons with the Ravens, so he has looked forward to returning to Baltimore this weekend since signing with the Cardinals last summer.

Profile: Todd Heap

The trip would be even better if Heap can play, something he hasn’t done since suffering a hamstring injury three weeks ago.

“I’m taking it day to day right now,” he said. “I’m hoping I’ll be ready.”

Heap was surprised when the Ravens released him in July. The Ravens needed the cap space ($4.6 million) and they had drafted two tight ends, Dennis Pitta and Ed Dickson, the year before.

“It’s something that hit me out of left field. I didn’t see it coming,” Heap said.

Heap signed a two-year, $6 million contract with the Cardinals, and was starting to make an impact when he suffered the injury in practice. In his prior two games, Heap caught 10 passes for 102 yards.

“This (the Ravens game) is one of the games I looked at and was definitely excited about,” Heap said.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh said losing Heap “was tough,” but the Ravens needed the cap space and wanted to play Pitta and Dickson.

“Todd, I’m sure, was hoping to finish here,” Harbaugh said. “He is so popular in the community. He’s just such a good guy. I think it was probably hard for him. He just handled it with class and grace, just what you would have expected.”

Beanie sits

Running back Beanie Wells (knee) was one of five players to miss all of Wednesday’s practice because of injuries.

Wells suffered a sprained knee last Sunday against the Vikings and experienced swelling. He hasn’t been ruled out of the Ravens game, but it appears doubtful he’ll play.

Two receivers were among those out Wednesday: Early Doucet (quadriceps) and DeMarco Sampson (hamstring). No information was available on their prognosis.

Linebacker Joey Porter (knee) missed practice, but it’s been common for him to sit out the Wednesday workouts. Safety Kerry Rhodes (foot) is out for a few more weeks.

Cornerback Mike Adams (hand) and tight end Jim Dray (pectoral) missed a portion of practice.

For the Ravens, two starters missed practice Wednesday: receiver Lee Evans (ankle) and left guard Ben Grubbs (toe).

Considine, in his seventh NFL season, played in the first four games for Carolina this year before being released on Oct. 4. Known for his special teams play, Considine was a fourth-round draft pick of Philadelphia in 2005 and played for the Eagles for four seasons. He signed as a free agent with Jacksonville in 2009.

The signing bolsters the safety corps depleted by the loss of starter Kerry Rhodes with a broken foot. Rhodes is expected to be sidelined for several weeks.

Arizona re-signed its former punter Graham last week because Dave Zastudil was out with a sore knee. The Cardinals are off this week.

Read More: Kerry Rhodes (S – ARI), Tim Hightower (RB – WAS), Roy Helu (RB – WAS), Arizona Cardinals

In two weeks of the 2011 NFL season, the Arizona Cardinals defense has been unimpressive. In Week 1, it was gashed by Cam Newton in his debut to the tune of 422 yards passing and a league record. In Week 2, versus the Washington Redskins, the rushing defense failed them, as Tim Hightower and Roy Helu ran for 170 yards between the two. The pass defense was not much better as Rex Grossman almost threw for 300 yards, finishing with 291.

To say that the defense has been a disappointment is an understatement. It has made plays at times, particularly in the red zone, but it hasn’t added up to good performances overall.

Said coach Ken Whisnehunt:

“We made a number of good plays defensively. When we’re on the same page and guys are understanding what they’re doing we’re a pretty good defense. But when we make our bad plays, they’re really bad. We’re dropping coverage. We’re not hitting the right gaps. We’re not stepping the right way when we’re blitzing. All those things are things we’ve got to work to get cleaned up.”

Much of this can be attributed to a couple of things — a new scheme under first-year defensive coordinator Ray Horton and the NFL lockout that made offseason workouts with the defensive coaches impossible. Plus, the new schemes are known for being difficult to learn — not that the team is using that as an excuse.

“It’s a tough system to learn,” said safety Kerry Rhodes. “Coming into a new season with it, it’s been a little frustrating but we’ve got a lot of time to rectify it.” At the same time though, Rhodes did not take all the blame away from the players. ”You can throw it off on it being complicated all you want, but at the end of the day we’ve got to run it.,” Rhodes continued. ”Other teams have had success with the same defense and they got it down so we got to get it too.”

So what is the plan now that things have not been ideal, especially with starting cornerbacks whose only starting NFL experience are the two games the team has played this season? Rhodes says that, after talking to Horton, the team is likely going to “try to scale some stuff back” and simplify things so that the players can worry more about execution and less about what the playcall is.

Luckily for the Cardinals, there is another weak opponent coming up. The Seattle Seahawks are next up on the schedule. It would be the perfect game to work on things, as Seattle has put up a total of 17 points in two weeks.

“We’re not where we want to be,” said Whisenhunt. “We’re working to get it corrected and I know our players are committed to doing that.”

Ray Horton spent 17 years working his way up the coaching ladder to a defensive coordinator position. So, no, having his unit yield 477 total yards to a team led by a rookie quarterback is not the first impression he dreamed of making.

“It was very difficult,” said Horton, hired by the Cardinals last February. “I had expectations for us.”

He still does, and fortunately for Horton and the Cardinals, they beat the Panthers 28-21. Cardinals defensive players bounced back quickly from their poor performance, while on Thursday, Horton admitted he was just putting it behind him.

Asked whether he worried about how players were going to respond, Horton said: “No, I was worried about how I was going to bounce back in practice. They know a win’s a win in this league. Coaches are a little more concerned about the fine details.

“They (players) worry about the scoreboard. I’m worried about, ‘Was this guy in the right fit? How can we improve?’ “

Coaches and players aren’t providing GPS turn-by-turn instructions on how they plan to improve. But they do point to the general problem area: the secondary.

“The front played well,” coach Ken Whisenhunt said. “The linebackers played well. We stopped the run. We made some plays on the ball. We just gave up some plays in back end and that’s tough. You make one mistake back there and it can be catastrophic.

“We had a comedy of errors in the back half.”

It was a continuation of a problem that played a big part in the Cardinals’ 5-11 record last season. The Cardinals allowed too many big plays, many of which were attributed to poor communication, not a lack of talent.

This year, there are new starters at cornerback, Patrick Peterson and A.J. Jefferson, and last week was the first start for each.

Horton, who played defensive back in the NFL for 10 years, is reminding himself to be patient.

“I’ve got two young kids starting at corner in the National Football League,” Horton said. “That’s what this league is, it’s a challenge. What I was comforted by was that during training camp, they were perfect. You expect that all the time, and you have to realize they’re not going to be. It’s an ebb-and-flow game.”

The problems in the secondary last Sunday were not confined to the cornerback spot. Strong safety Adrian Wilson, in his 11th season, was caught cheating up when he should have been providing help deep. The result was receiver Steve Smith getting behind Wilson and free safety Kerry Rhodes for a 77-yard touchdown.

As Smith sprinted for the end zone, Rhodes looked back a couple of times, apparently wondering what happened to the help he was supposed to receive.

Wilson admitted after the game that he blew the coverage, and on Thursday, Rhodes said it’s inaccurate to blame Peterson and Jefferson for all of last Sunday’s struggles.

“We can’t blame it all on the young guys,” Rhodes said. “It’s a collective group; all of us DBs are together. We just have to get it tightened up as a whole.”

The Cardinals, however, have been talking about tightening up their pass coverage for more than a year now. Until they do, they won’t win consistently, and Horton won’t enjoy many pleasant Sundays.

“Listen, Ray’s a good football coach and he’s been in this game a long time,” Whisenhunt said. “He deserves to get an opportunity to be a coordinator, and obviously the first game didn’t go the way any of us wanted it to go, but we’re going to improve. I know that.”

Sep 5, 2011 – The Arizona Cardinals are finally settling into a regular season routine as they prepare for their NFL Week 1 game versus the Carolina Panthers. The team roster is down to the players who will be going into battle this week and there’s an air of confidence, excitement and determination with this group that is very disappointed with last year’s result.

Star defensive end Darnell Dockett mentioned last year’s 5-11 record several times when he spoke to the media after Monday’s practice.

“Our main focus everyday we step on the field (is to) get better. We just remember what 5-11 felt like,” Dockett said. ”If you look at the game film from last year year and look at how much we didn’t play together, how many mistakes we made, things like that — it sucks. To have an opportunity to go out and redeem yourself again…A lot of games is personal.”

Outside of the team, no one is talking about the Cardinals defense this year and until they deliver on the field, no one should. Inside the team, there’s a lot more hope for improvement.

“We think we can be one of the better units in this league so that’s the way we’re approaching it. We know coach is going to be aggressive and that’s the way we like it and that’s the way we want to be. Just go out there and win or lose on our own terms,” veteran safety Kerry Rhodes said.

Preparations are well underway for the Panthers but with the combination of normal Week 1 unknowns along with a new head coach (Ron Rivera) and a new quarterback (Cam Newton), there’s only so much that can be done.

Coach Ken Whisenhunt doesn’t mind that too much. He’s stressed being prepared for the unknown all preseason, ”You don’t know if what they’ve shown in preseason is what they’re going to show in regular season. But that’s the way it can be every Sunday in the NFL.”

Larry Fitzgerald says the offense has been watching the Panthers preseason games to get a feel for their new personnel and have also been looking at film from San Diego. Rivera most recently was the defensive coordinator for the Chargers who were a number-one ranked defense in the NFL last year.

The Cardinals don’t have practice on Tuesday but will continue preparation for the season opener after the day off.

Other notes:

“Whenever you get to the first game of the season it’s always an unknown, especially with a new head coach coming in…We know with Cam (Newton) that it’s going to be a little bit more simplified so we’ll probably approach it that way.” — Kerry Rhodes

“I have the same focus I’ve had since the first week of training camp. That’s getting better, getting the core group of guys that I knew was going to be here better…We played against Carolina last year and a lot of us were hurt. It was towards the end of the season, nothing was going right…We want to see what they got now.” — Darnell Dockett

“He’s the first pick of the draft for a reason. A great player. I don’t go into the game underestimating him. One thing I know about quarterbacks, you give them enough time, no matter who back there, they’ll get the ball up. Our biggest thing is going out playing solid football, assignment football, and not get so caught up on who the quarterback is and what they got. We’re playing at home so you got to play at our level and that’s the mind set that we’ve got to have.” — Docket on Cam Newton

“We want to make some explosive plays in the run game and the pass game, defensively, special teams. We feel as if we’re capable of making big things happen.” — Larry Fitzgerald

I had no idea this was going on in Flagstaff, site of the Arizona Cardinals training camp, but it is.

I had no idea this was going on in Flagstaff, site of the Arizona Cardinals training camp, but it is. The Arizona Cardinals are, apparently, fond of the Segway. So fond, in fact, that Darnell Dockett, Adrian Wilson and Kerry Rhodes have formed a Segway crew.

If there’s one man that can pull of a Segway without looking completely out of place, it’s probably Darnell Dockett. The only disappointing part of Dockett’s ride is the lack of a place to put his pet alligator, Nino.

Don’t lie: It would be pretty awesome to see Dockett lead the Cardinals out of the tunnel on his off-road Segway.

Unlike the rest of the crew, Larry Fitzgerald practices safe Seg, wearing his helmet while off-roading around the practice fields.

This isn’t a new thing for the Cardinals, but it doesn’t make the pictures any less awesome. Can’t wait til the Cards have Segway jousting battles during camp.
