Read More: Kevin Kolb (QB – ARI), John Skelton (QB – ARI), Arizona Cardinals

Kevin Kolb is back. After missing four weeks due to a bad case of turf toe complicated by a bone bruise in his foot, the Arizona Cardinals will have their prize quarterback taking snaps Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys. At least that’s plan barring any set backs and none are expected (which is why they are called “set backs”).

“Yeah, I feel really good,” Kolb said Wednesday after taking all the reps in practice for the first time since the injury. “Obviously, we’ll see tomorrow how it feels after a full day, but I have full intention of playing.”

Kolb was nearing ready to go last week, but the team had enough doubt about Kolb’s foot they decided early on that John Skelton would get the start so he could get the full benefit of practicing with the first team.

As to be expected, Coach Ken Whisenhunt was his normally evasive self on such matters.

“The way it’s gone this season for us with different guys, I’m not going to say anything like that today. We’ll see how it is tomorrow,” Whiz said, adding with about as much of a definitive answer as you will get from him, “But I said Sunday after the (Rams) game that we’re a lot more optimistic that he’ll have a chance to play this week.”

Kolb is anxious to get back out on the field and understands how important it is for him and the entire offense to play well in these final five games of the season.

“We still don’t feel like offensively we’ve played an entire game yet as a complete unit. That’s a big goal of ours,” Kolb said, adding the offense needs to figure out ”who we are”.

He did seem to indicate that with the way the defense and special teams are playing, the role of the Cardinals’ quarterback is to not screw up.

“I think if you look back on a lot of games, if us as quarterbacks just did our part and just took care of the ball and played a good, solid game then we would have won quite a few of them. That’s my mentality and that needs to be our mentality every time we hit the field. Just do your job (then) we’ll take care of business.”

It will be interesting to see if that becomes the new norm in Arizona. That model has certainly worked in San Francisco and Baltimore, but under Ken Whisenhunt the Cardinals have followed the “Kurt Warner Plan” of letting the QB make big plays to the star receiver.

That plan didn’t work last year with the Derek Anderson Max Hall John Skelton monster and as the team has found out this year, it’s not likely to work with Kevin Kolb any time soon. Fortunately, the defense is getting better and Beanie Wells has stepped up his game. That allows Whisenhunt to be more conservative on offense and let’s the QB “manage the game”, to use that infamous NFL phrase.

We’ll see how that plays out, if at all. When you have No. 11 on your team, there’s a lot of pressure to throw him the ball and a lot of comes from Larry Fitzgerald himself lobbying for targets. He does make a pretty compelling case.

Other Injury News

In other Cardinals injury news, TE Rob Housler (groin) was back practicing in full while TE Todd Heap remains limited. As expected Joey Porter (knee) and Kerry Rhodes (foot) are still out with no time table for return.

Beanie Well was limited in practice as has been the norm for him on Wednesday as he gives his knee more time to recover from the last game and prepare for the next one.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The Arizona Cardinals have shored up their depleted quarterback ranks by signing Brodie Croyle, in the process parting ways with Max Hall.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Arizona Cardinals have shored up their depleted quarterback ranks by signing Brodie Croyle, in the process parting ways with Max Hall.

Hall, who partially dislocated his left shoulder in practice on Monday, was waived-injured, a move that could lead to an injury settlement with the second-year quarterback. Coach Ken Whisenhunt said that would allow Hall to be re-signed at some point in the season if the team needs him.

“It’s the only way we could potentially get him back,” Whisenhunt said. “If we went straight injured reserve, then he wouldn’t be able to come back and play for us this year. But the way I understand it, the way the rules work now, is that if we work out a settlement with him in whatever time frame, then we would have an opportunity later in the season to bring him back if we needed that.”

The Cardinals also signed veteran punter Dave Zastudil, an indication the team is not satisfied with the performance of Australian Ben Graham, who has held that job for the past two seasons. Graham had a big season in 2009, averaging 47 yards per punt with 42 inside the 20-yard line and 17 inside the 10, and only three touchbacks. Last year, as the team went from 10-6 to 5-11, Graham’s average dropped to 43.4 yards with 29 inside the 20 and 12 inside the 10. He had nine touchbacks.

“We weren’t as good in a lot of areas last year, and that was definitely one of the areas that we weren’t up to our standards,” Whisenhunt said. “So that’s the reason we have extra guys in camp. We’re trying to look at that position and get the best player we can.”

Zastudil, who started his pro career with Baltimore, is a 10-year NFL veteran, the last five with Cleveland. He spent last season on injured reserve with a knee injury. Zastudil has a career average of 42.7 yards in 113 games with 179 punts inside the opponent’s 20.

Croyle participated in Wednesday morning’s walkthrough and is expected to play some in Saturday night’s pre-season home opener against San Diego, because the only other healthy quarterbacks on the roster are starter Kevin Kolb and Rich Bartel. John Skelton has not practised all week after spraining an ankle in last weekend’s loss at Green Bay.

Croyle was the obvious choice to fill in because he spent the last five seasons in Kansas City, primarily as a backup, the last two under Todd Haley, who was Whisenhunt’s offensive co-ordinator before going to the Chiefs.

“He was with Todd in that system so there’s obviously some similarities there,” Whisenhunt said. “As far as being able to get him in here in two days and have him potentially ready to play, we felt like that was the best opportunity for us to do that. You figure we’ve got two games in five days, so it would be very hard to get just any quarterback in here up to speed with the ability play, which could happen in those two games.”

Hall, a high school star in the Phoenix suburb of Mesa, made the Cardinals’ roster as an undrafted rookie out of BYU a year ago, impressing the coaches with his quick grasp of the offence. When starter Derek Anderson faltered, Hall became the starter in week five, helping Arizona upset New Orleans. But he had a bad game the following week at Seattle, then was benched after two passes were returned for touchdowns against Tampa Bay.

Anderson returned, then Hall came back briefly before going down with the same injury he sustained this week. The rookie Skelton started the final four games of the year.

The Cardinals practised Wednesday afternoon, and have a morning workout Thursday before heading down to the triple-digit heat of the desert.

Kolb said he wants to play into the third quarter against the Chargers, something Whisenhunt said probably would happen.

The Cardinals’ new quarterback has been to University of Phoenix Stadium once, when he was a backup for the Eagles in their NFC championship game loss to Arizona in the 2008 season.

“I don’t even know how to get out there,” he said. “I have to look it up on my phone and get directions.”

Kolb wants to use these next two home pre-season games to get his pre-game routine down.

“Game day you don’t want any surprises,” he said. “You want to just get there, be in the right mindset, and be ready to roll.”

As for excitement in the waning days of camp, there wasn’t much, other than Kolb, riding his Segway, narrowly avoiding what could have been a nasty collision with one of the multitude of skunks that roam the area.

There is the quick update of the day.

Thoughts on the Arizona Cardinals after checking out ESPN's 300 highest-rated fantasy players for the 2011 season: Arizona Cardinals running back Beanie Wells became more valuable from a fantasy standpoint once a knee injury knocked out Ryan Williams for the season.

Thoughts on the Arizona Cardinals after checking out ESPN’s 300 highest-rated fantasy players for the 2011 season:

Arizona Cardinals running back Beanie Wells became more valuable from a fantasy standpoint once a knee injury knocked out Ryan Williams for the season. Wells figures to get most rushing attempts for Arizona if healthy.

Larry Fitzgerald was only the sixth-ranked receiver from a fantasy standpoint, trailing Andre Johnson, Roddy White, Greg Jennings, Hakeem Nicks and Calvin Johnson. I could see Fitzgerald’s touchdown total spiking now that Derek Anderson, John Skelton and Max Hall are not his primary quarterbacks.

Kevin Kolb ranked only 18th among fantasy quarterbacks, just ahead of the New York Jets’ Mark Sanchez. He’s already shown an eagerness to force the ball to Fitzgerald, with encouraging results.

The No. 18 ranking seems a bit low for a quarterback with Fitzgerald at the ready, but in looking at the names above Kolb on the list, the ranking seems about right.

Aaron Rodgers, Michael Vick, Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Philip Rivers, Tony Romo, Matt Schaub, Ben Roethlisberger, Josh Freeman, Matt Ryan, Eli Manning, Joe Flacco, Sam Bradford, Jay Cutler, Matt Cassell and Matthew Stafford rank ahead of Kolb.

Unranked Cardinals sleeper: Rookie tight end Rob Housler. The third-round draft choice needs seasoning as a blocker. He has flashed ability as a receiver through two preseason games. Crowding at the position will hurt him, however. Todd Heap and Jeff King give the Cardinals veteran options. They have a combined 16 touchdown receptions over the last two seasons.

Backup quarterback John Skelton is wearing a walking boot for what Whisenhunt says appears to be a high ankle sprain.

That left only Kevin Kolb and Richard Bartel for Tuesday’s practice. The team is expected to add a third quarterback for Saturday’s preseason game against San Diego.

Hall, a star high school quarterback in the Phoenix suburb of Mesa, made the Cardinals roster last year as an undrafted rookie out of BYU. He was quick to absorb the offense and when Derek Anderson faltered, Hall became the starter. Arizona upset New Orleans in his first start, but he was 12 for 32 passing with three interceptions in his next two starts. After Hall had two picks returned for touchdowns against Tampa Bay, Anderson returned but only briefly.

Skelton started the last four games of the season after Hall went down with a shoulder injury against St. Louis.

Plagued by a lack of arm strength to make the long passes, Hall was running at No. 4 on the depth chart when he scrambled on a play and extended his left arm to the ground to catch his balance. He left the field holding his arm and in obvious pain.

“It’s unfortunate but that’s part of the game,” Whisenhunt said, “and hopefully it’s not something that will force him to miss too much time.”

Bartel was under contract to Cleveland and Washington but didn’t appear in an NFL game until after he joined the Cardinals in the middle of last season. He directed a late drive in Arizona’s 28-20 loss at Green Bay on Friday night but threw an ill-advised pass that was intercepted in the end zone.

“He’s improved,” Whisenhunt said. “Without having an off-season, he did some work on his own with the guys and he’s done a very good job. Obviously I didn’t like the interception at the end of the two-minute drive but he was very efficient up until that point.”

Skelton was injured in the Green Bay game.

“It’s looking a little bit more like a high ankle sprain,” Whisenhunt said, “but I don’t know how long that’s going to be. He’s making good progress. We’ll see how it progresses, but there’s not a lot of swelling. He’s got some soreness in there and we just want to make sure because it’s so critical to the quarterback, especially on his plant foot, driving and throwing off that foot. So we’re going to obviously be a little bit more cautious with that.”

The Cardinals worked out Tuesday afternoon, leaving them only three more practices before leaving their training camp at Northern Arizona University — elevation 7,000 feet — and heading down to the desert. They have a walk-through Wednesday morning, followed by a full practice that afternoon. The final workout will be Thursday morning.

Aug 20, 2011 – If you’re checking in on the St. Louis Rams’ newly quarterbacked rivals, score one for the Arizona Cardinals—Kevin Kolb has been perfectly competent in two brief preseason outings, with his 6-for-11, 80-yard performance Friday against the Green Bay Packers of a piece with his 4-for-7, 68-yard debut. The preseason is more important for Kolb than the average veteran quarterback addition, given his limited regular-season resume, but competence is everything the Cardinals could hope for after a brutal 2010 that saw them dump Matt Leinart and cycle through Derek Anderson and John Skelton.

Kolb’s career numbers are unspectacular, through 2009 and 2010 were much better than his first step in 2008; over the last two years, in 12 games and seven starts, Kolb has thrown for 1938 yards on 285 attempts for a Y/A of 6.8, and an AY/A, after his 10 interceptions and 11 touchdowns, of 6.0. 27 this year, his virtual stalemate with Sam Bradford’s numbers as a true rookie would seem to bode well for the Rams.

The Cardinals might not have plucked a future Pro Bowler from the Eagles, but given the mess they had to clean up from last year they might have done enough to make themselves contenders once more.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — John Skelton says he was “clueless” when he joined the Arizona Cardinals a year ago as a fifth-round draft choice out of Fordham.

Circumstances he never expected led to him starting at quarterback the last four games of his rookie season.

“I went into the season thinking I wasn’t going to play, just sit back and learn as much as I can,” Skelton said Sunday, after Arizona’s first workout since its 24-18 preseason win at Oakland on Thursday. “But for one reason or another I ended up having to play, and those four games I did at the end of the year were really an invaluable experience.”

This year, he says he is 10 times more familiar with the offense and is comfortable as the backup to Kevin Kolb. He said he harbors no hard feelings that the Cardinals felt it necessary to bring in a high-priced, high-profile quarterback.

“Not in the least,” Skelton said. “The coaching staff said that, ‘John, honestly we need to bring someone else in. That doesn’t change the role that we want you to play. We want you to come in, compete and learn as much as you can.’”

The raw ability of the 6-foot-6, strong-armed Skelton is on display every day in practice.

“I don’t know if I’ve ever been around a guy that’s as talented physically, throwing the football, as he is,” wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald said. “He can throw anywhere, with any foot position. I’m talking about arm strength. He doesn’t have to have his feet set. I mean, he can throw anywhere.”

Skelton, though, has work to do on his decision-making and mastering the nuances of the position at the NFL level.

Still, the coaches feel good enough about him to make him the No. 2 quarterback, and starters at that position often don’t make it through an entire 16-game season.

“Being a backup, you’re always one play away,” Skelton said. “You have to prepare like you’re the starter, even though you’re not going to get those starting reps. It’s an extremely difficult thing to do, and when your number is called you have to be ready to perform. That’s the job of a backup quarterback.”

A year ago, after the Cardinals cut Matt Leinart, Skelton was a third stringer behind starter Derek Anderson and undrafted rookie Max Hall.

When Anderson struggled mightily, Hall got his chance. Hall, who is back in camp this year in a battle to make the team, had an awful time, then went down with a season-ending shoulder injury. So the Cardinals turned to Skelton, and the results weren’t all that bad, at least compared with the way the rest of the season went.

Arizona, 5-11 overall, was 2-2 with Skelton as starter, with victories over Denver and Dallas.

Skelton’s statistics were unspectacular. He completed 46 percent of his passes for 662 yards and two touchdowns, with two interceptions.

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.

Read More: John Skelton (QB – ARI), Max Hall (QB – ARI), Oakland Raiders, Arizona Cardinals

Max Hall and the Arizona Cardinals got off to a strong start Thursday night as they completed a last-minute touchdown drive to defeat the Oakland Raiders 24-18. These games don’t mean much, but hey, who honestly wants to lose? Here is some reaction from around the blogosphere:

- Jess Root, Revenge Of The Birds

A.J. Jefferson’s play: Jefferson definitely has come a long way. Being undrafted has been a huge motivating factor. He got beat on one play, but as he told me on Twitter, “in Cover 2, i’s hard for me to make that play inside.” He responded with a pass breakup. He didn’t get any turnovers. The way he is headed right now will certainly get him into the playing rotation and might make him a regular season starter.

John Skelton’s comfort in running the offense: Last season, Skelton looked good…for a fifth-round project quarterback. He was not good. But he looked miles ahead of where he was a year ago. Accuracy was an issue last season. The TV guys (maybe it was postgame on the radio) talked about how he has an accurate arm. I’m not sure about that, but his confidence level definitely better. Don’t confuse this with thinking he’s ready to be a starter.
All of us have to work out some kinks,” Kolb said. “They’ve got to get used to my cadence in a live-game setting, getting out of the huddle. There are a lot of things that you can’t duplicate in practice.

“It was kind of what you expected,” Whisenhunt said. “I was happy to see us make some plays, especially with that first offense, as far as Kevin running the offense and Larry making some plays down the field. For a first game, especially with the limited amount of work of we had, that’s exciting.

Kolb is a mobile quarterback, something the Cardinals haven’t had under Whisenhunt. Matt Leinart, Kurt Warner and Derek Anderson didn’t do much damage with their feet. Kolb can move. “That’s why I tell those guys, just keep fighting. You get beat, just push them on by and I’ll step up in the pocket and try to make a play,” Kolb said.

I will say this, the game looked to me a lot like any other preseason game. In other words, it wasn’t overly sloppy, it didn’t reflect to the naked eye (or typical fan) the lost offseason or lack of practice time. We’ll see if that holds true once games start for real.

The Cardinals bolstered their offensive line on Thursday, agreeing to terms with center Lyle Sendlein and reaching a five-year agreement with former Packers guard Daryn Colledge.

Colledge’s contract is worth $27.5 million, including guarantees of between $8 million to $10 million.

Terms of Sendlein’s deal were not immediately available.

Both players are expected to sign Friday, and they fill a huge need for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals entered the off-season with their three interior offensive linemen from last season not under contract.

Sendlein, from Scottsdale Chaparral High, has started the past three seasons for the Cardinals.

Colledge is the projected starter at left guard, replacing Alan Faneca, who announced his retirement this off-season.

Colledge has started for the Packers since he was drafted in the second round out of Boise State in 2006.

He has a reputation as a better pass blocker than run blocker, and has never missed a game in college or the NFL.

“We were talking to a few teams,” Colledge told ESPNmilwaukee.com. “There were better offers in other places but we wanted to do this for family.”

Colledge was born in Fairbanks and grew up in North Pole, Alaska.

The Cardinals remain interested in re-signing right guard Deuce Lutui, another unrestricted free agent.

Roster churn

The Cardinals released two former starters on Thursday and are asking a third to take a pay cut.

It was no surprise the team cut linebacker Gerald Hayes and quarterback Derek Anderson. They had lost their starting positions and Hayes was due to make a salary of $4.25 million this year, and Anderson was to receive $3.9 million.

Outside linebacker Joey Porter agreed to adjust his contract and will report to camp. Details were not available, but Porter took a pay cut from the $5.75 million he was due to make this season

Porter, 34, must decide if he’s willing to take the cut and perhaps move to a part-time role in Arizona, or be released, taking a chance on signing with another team.

The Cardinals have expressed interest in free-agent linebacker Stewart Bradley of the Eagles. Bradley can play both inside and outside.

Also, the Cardinals expect to sign Steelers defensive end Nick Eason on Friday. It will be a two-year deal. Financial terms were not available.

That’s all for today.

The Arizona Cardinals have already acquired their quarterback of the future earlier today in Kevin Kolb and now they’re looking to improve defensively. Free agent linebacker Stewart Bradley, formerly of the Philadelphia Eagles, is the target.

From a tweet courtesy of Jason La Canfora:

Cards making a push for Eagles free agent LB Stewart Bradley. Could be a real nice fit switching over to 3-4 scheme

Bradley, a 27-year old linebacker out of Nebraska, has spent the first three seasons of his career in Philadelphia. He battled injuries at times in the 2010 season and missed four games, but he’s proven to be a reliable option. He’s recorded 186 tackles in those three seasons and has just three sacks in that time span.

As mentioned in the tweet, Bradley could be a real nice fit for Arizona. The Cardinals have been a busy franchise this week and the signing of Bradley would be yet another good move as they prepare for the upcoming season.

News and Notes:

The Cardinals made two other significant moves today. Quarterback Derek Anderson has been released and so has linebacker Gerald Hayes.

TEMPE, Ariz. - Whatever the Arizona Cardinals were doing in their pursuit of Kevin Kolb, they were keeping it to themselves.

TEMPE, Ariz. – Whatever the Arizona Cardinals were doing in their pursuit of Kevin Kolb, they were keeping it to themselves.

While other quarterbacks in the NFL found new homes, Kolb remained the property of the Philadelphia Eagles on Wednesday, although there were persistent indications that progress was being made toward finalizing a deal that would send Michael Vick’s backup to the Cardinals for cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a draft pick, probably a second rounder.

Agents for Kolb and Rodgers-Cromartie did not return calls, and the Cardinals’ brain trust remained ensconced in its upstairs offices trying to put together a team, with quarterback at the top of a list of many issues to be addressed.

Any delay in announcing the trade could stem from talks on a long-term contract that Kolb wants with a new team. He has a one-year deal with Philadelphia.

There were a few Cardinal-related developments. Arizona reached an agreement to re-sign punter Ben Graham, and the agent for Steve Breaston said the wide receiver would not re-sign with the Cardinals.

Cardinals players are to report to the team facility in Tempe on Thursday. They are to undergo physicals on Friday, then travel to Flagstaff for a mandatory meeting that evening. The first practice at their Northern Arizona University facility is scheduled for Saturday.

Poor play at quarterback was a major component in the team’s dropoff from two-time NFC West champion to a 5-11 season last year. The team is to release quarterback Derek Anderson on Thursday and coach Ken Whisenhunt has emphasized that the Cardinals are aggressively seeking a veteran at that position.

Kolb has openly talked about his desire to play for Arizona, saying it would be a good fit. The quarterback, who turns 27 next month, has appeared in 19 games, with seven starts in the last two seasons. He has completed 61 per cent of his passes for 2,082 yards and 11 touchdowns with 14 interceptions.

He began last season as the heir-apparent to Donovan McNabb in Philadelphia, but he went down with a concussion in the opener, losing his job to Vick in the process. Kolb did have a couple of strong performances after that when Vick was hurt. Against Atlanta in Week 6, he completed 23 of 29 passes for 326 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.

If Kolb signs a new contract as part of a trade with the Cardinals, he wouldn’t be allowed to practice with the team until Aug. 4, the same day any incoming veteran free agents would first be allowed to work out.

Breaston’s departure leaves a void at No. 2 receiver behind Larry Fitzgerald.

Breaston caught 187 passes for 2,528 yards and seven touchdowns in four seasons with the Cardinals. In Arizona’s Super Bowl season of 2008, he had career highs of 77 catches for 1,006 yards. Bothered by a knee injury much of last season, Breaston caught 47 passes for 718 yards.

Free agent signings can’t be officially announced until Saturday.

The Cardinals also face a serious need on the interior of the offensive line. One starting guard, Alan Faneca, has retired. The other, Deuce Lutui, is an unrestricted free agent. Lutui’s agent, Ken Harris, would only say that talks are ongoing. He would not say if those discussions included Arizona. Starting centre Lyle Sendlein also is a free agent.

Arizona reached contract agreements with 21 undrafted rookie free agents.

Among them was Stephen Skelton, a tight end from Fordham, the same school his brother, John, attended. Also agreeing to terms with the Cardinals was Miami safety Jared Campbell, Calais’ brother.

The Cardinals announced their Flagstaff practice schedule. The team’s camp in northern Arizona will run through Aug. 25.
