The Arizona Cardinals are looking to finish their season on a high note against the Seattle Seahawks this Sunday, and will have some new blood on the sideline to do so as the team announced on Wednesday the signing of tackle D.J. Young from the practice squad.

Young, the 6-5, 298 pound undrafted rookie out of Michigan State and Bowling Green, spent the entire season on the Cards practice squad after being released from the team back on Sept. 2, but will now join the team for the last game of the season, giving the Cards more depth on the offensive line with Brandon Keith playing a bit banged up these days.

Young started 23 games on the o-line in two seasons with Michigan State, then at Bowling Green after a transfer. Young will wear #67 for the Cardinals.

In a corresponding roster move wide receiver Jaymar Johnson was released by the team, but was immediately re-signed to the practice squad.

On the eve of Thanksgiving, it appears that the Arizona Cardinals are closer to getting some key players back for game action. Quarterback Kevin Kolb and tight end Todd Heap, both important offseason acquisitions, participated in practice in a limited fashion. There is some optimism that they may be able to play on Sunday against the St. Louis Rams.

Kolb took about 35 to 40 percent of the snaps with the first team, according to his own estimation and also about half the snaps with the scout team. If his foot and toe respond well to the action, it will allow him more reps in practice and a likely return to game action and starting against the Rams.

In addition to Heap (hamstring), fellow tight end Rob Housler (groin) also was limited in practice. Michael Adams (hamstring) and Beanie Wells (knee) were also limited.

There were four players who did not practice. As expected, safety Kerry Rhodes (foot) and linebacker Joey Porter (knee) were out. In addition to them, tackles Brandon Keith and Jeremy Bridges did not practice. Keith is recovering from a concussion he suffered against the 49ers and Bridges was out due to non-football reasons.

The other three players on the injury report fully practiced. LaRod Stephens-Howling (shoulder) and Paris Lenon (groin) have been listed now for a couple of weeks. Darnell Dockett (groin) appeared on the list as well.

What are your opinions.

John Skelton needs to find Larry Fitzgerald

The basic scouting report on the Eagles is that you can run against them, but better think twice about throwing. There is some truth to that, because the Eagles are allowing 5 yards per rush. But they can be vulnerable via the air, too, having allowed 14 passing touchdowns. The Cardinals, whose secondary gets ripped, have yielded 9. The Cardinals, however, might not be built to score through the air against the Eagles. Their tackles, Levi Brown and Brandon Keith, are not good in pass protection, and Eagles ends Jason Babin and Trent Cole can bring pressure. Cardinals quarterback John Skelton must do a better job finding receiver Larry Fitzgerald when he’s in single coverage.

Edge: Eagles.

          				by Bob McManaman – Oct. 3, 2011 10:39 PM
The Arizona Republic

For the past few years, the Cardinals’ offensive linemen have been yearning to do more run blocking and less pass blocking.

It’s a way to unleash some aggression, they say, when you can drive an opponent back with some meanness and attitude as opposed to always dropping back and trying to fend off a potential pass rusher.

They finally got their wish Sunday against the New York Giants, as the Cardinals rushed for 156 yards – including a career-high 138 and three touchdowns by third-year back Beanie Wells, who was supposed to be nursing a hamstring injury.

The Cardinals lost because they couldn’t hang on to a 10-point, fourth-quarter lead, but at least there was some reason for optimism at the team’s Tempe training facility Monday.

“It’s a great feeling,” left guard Daryn Colledge, a free-agent addition from the Green Bay Packers, said of establishing the run game. “Coming from an offense where we didn’t run the ball, either, and to be in one that we feel like we can get the yards when we need to is great. It’s a presence we feel we can meet all year.

“It takes pressure off the quarterback and I hope we can bust a few more because we had a lot of hard runs where I think we only had a couple over nine yards. That’s good grinding yardage, but we’d like to get one or two more explosive ones and then you’ve got something you can really hang your hat on.”

Wells wasn’t available to reporters Monday, but coach Ken Whisenhunt said the running back’s career day could definitely be a sign of a breakout year many have predicted for the former first-round pick out of Ohio State.

“I sure hope so,” Whisenhunt said. “We’ve been pretty consistent in saying Beanie was running well and we felt good about where he was. I think his confidence is certainly high right now. And I know our line feels good about our run game and how we’re attacking it there. If we can continue to do that, it’s certainly going to help us win some games.”

Wells apparently didn’t have any setbacks with the hamstring problem that kept him out of last week’s game at Seattle.

“He was tired and a little sore, which you would expect,” Whisenhunt said, ” . . . but I don’t anticipate there being any issues this week.”

About that ‘fumble’

It was the most controversial play of the Week 4 NFL schedule, but Whisenhunt once again refused to use it as an excuse for the Cardinals blowing a 10-point, fourth-quarter lead to the Giants.

Victor Cruz inexplicably went to the ground after catching a 17-yard pass from Eli Manning late in regulation, dropping the ball without being touched, and virtually everyone thought it was a fumble.

But it wasn’t ruled that way. Officials determined Cruz went down on his own, resulting in a dead-ball situation and refusing to acknowledge Whisenhunt’s challenge flag.

Though there was talk Monday throughout NFL circles that the league may clarify the rule and change some language to it, Whisenhunt couldn’t help but be apathetic about the play.

“I’ll be perfectly honest with you – it really doesn’t matter what I think,” he said. “I threw the challenge flag and they wouldn’t allow me to challenge it, so they made the ruling and I have no choice but to live by the ruling.

“But I’ll tell you this: It shouldn’t have come down to that play. It shouldn’t have mattered with that play. . . . Those things happen, that call was the officials’ call and there’s nothing I can do with that.”

Right-tackle situation

Starting right tackle Brandon Keith has been dealing with pain in his right knee since undergoing arthroscopic surgery to fix some meniscus damage, and he tweaked it Sunday.

But Keith also said he had the knee drained of fluid Saturday, a procedure he has been forced to do on occasion since the operation.

“I don’t anticipate any long-term problems there,” Whisenhunt said.

Asked if Jeremy Bridges might replace Keith in the starting lineup, Whisenhunt wasn’t willing to commit to anything.

“It depends, health-wise, where (Keith) is, if he can get his reps. We’ll look at it,” he said. “Jeremy did OK in that role and he’s done OK for us when he’s had to start. We’ll see how it progresses this week.”

He ultimately will own every tangible receiving record in Cardinals history and on Sunday, Larry Fitzgerald reached his latest milestone on a 73-yard scoring pass from Kevin Kolb.

It was his 66th touchdown reception, tying him with Roy Green at the top of the club’s all-time list. The milestone was naturally overshadowed by Arizona’s 22-21 loss to the Redskins, but a day later, Fitzgerald was able to reflect on the accomplishment.

“It’s an honor for me because I have had a great personal relationship with Roy over the years,” Fitzgerald said. “He took me under his wing and taught me so much about the nuances of the game and I’m very appreciative of that relationship.

“Just to be mentioned with him, it’s really an honor.”

Kolb, who completed seven passes to Fitzgerald totaling 133 yards, expects bigger and better things from his star receiver.

“He’s a special guy,” Kolb said. ” . . . His eye-hand coordination is ridiculous, and I’m learning more about him every day. I can’t wait to get out there and throw some more to him.”

Fitzgerald needs 160 more receiving yards to tie Green for the most in Cardinals history with 8,497.

Play time

After two games, the Cardinals don’t appear to have any problems scoring points. They’ve scored 49. But surprisingly, the offense hasn’t been running very many plays.

They had 54 in a Week 1 victory over Carolina and ran just 48 plays at Washington.

“That’s tough because it wears down your defense,” coach Ken Whisenhunt said. “That’s what we saw last year. But the difference this year and the reason we have a better chance is because our average on our offensive plays is much higher.

“We’ve had three long scoring plays this year. Listen, I’m not ever going to complain about having a two-play, 60-yard scoring drive or a one-play, 73-yard scoring drive. Would we like to have more plays? Obviously, we would. But I don’t want to get panicky because our yards-per-play is pretty high.”

Cast-iron QB

Kolb has taken his share of hits already this season, including a big one Sunday right after throwing the long touchdown pass to Fitzgerald. He got shoved to the ground and fell into the legs of lineman Brandon Keith, which caused Kolb’s helmet to come off.

“But he popped up and seemed OK. He’s a tough kid,” Whisenhunt said.

Tight end Jeff King was even more complimentary, saying Kolb had proved his toughness.

“He’ll stand there and make plays no matter what the situation is,” King said. “It means a lot. You can follow a guy into battle with someone like that as your leader. He’s doing everything you can ask for from a quarterback.”

The punt game

Punter Dave Zastudil didn’t seem to have a very good game against the Redskins, but Whisenhunt defended him, saying he was pleased for the most part.

What he didn’t particularly like was the team’s punt coverage, which was noticeably missing one of its top gunners in the injured LaRod Stephens-Howling. That slowed the Cardinals’ pursuit downfield.

“I was pleased with Dave’s directional kicking,” Whisenhunt said, “but our coverage aspect of it was something we’ve got to get better at.”

Quick kicks

Safety Kerry Rhodes was flagged with an unnecessary roughness penalty during Washington’s opening possession because he bumped an official, Whisenhunt said.

“It was inadvertent,” Whisenhunt said. “I asked the official about it and he said that’s why Kerry didn’t get ejected, because it was inadvertent. It was just an unfortunate thing.”

- King on Sunday’s one-point loss: “We had an opportunity to put the game out of reach and we didn’t. Games on the road, when you have a chance to win like that, you have to win because down the road, we’re going to look back at this game and regret that we let it slip away.”

That’s all the news for today.

Tossing an 80-yard touchdown pass to receiver Larry Fitzgerald is fun, but for pure satisfaction, Cardinals quarterback Kevin Kolb prefers the scoring drive that covered about eight minutes Saturday night against the Chargers.

On that possession, the Cardinals displayed a diversity of threats.

First play – Running back Beanie Wells gained 6 yards off tackle.

Second play – Kolb threw short to receiver Early Doucet, who made a nice run for a 19-yard gain.

Third play – Kolb completed a 12-yard pass to tight end Todd Heap.

Fourth play – Kolb hit Fitzgerald for 9-yards.

Fifth play – Wells took a pitch right, then pitched to receiver Andre Roberts on a reverse. Roberts picked up blocks from Fitzgerald and tackle Levi Brown and scored from 34-yards out.

“That one (possession) was the most gratifying,” Kolb said. “That’s kind of when we came to the sideline, looked at each other and said, ‘all right, this is the kind of team we need to be right here.’

“The shots are nice. We want a couple of those per game. But that’s when you’re whipping somebody. When Beanie gets involved, O-line is pounding them. We’re dinking and dunking them. Taking a shot here and there. That’s the kind of offense we have to have and that’s my style of play.”

There is much work to be done, however, before the Cardinals can consistently do that. They strung more good plays together in the loss to the Chargers than they did in either of their previous two games. But mistakes, especially penalties, continue to hurt.

Right tackle Brandon Keith was called for three penalties. Roberts and Brown each had a false start.

There were big-play opportunities that were missed. Kolb overthrew Fitzgerald early. And Wells was a stumble or two from breaking long runs.

“I’m feeling comfortable, but there are still a lot of things I need to be more precise on,” Wells said. “It’s just a matter of me getting the right fits, the right timing . . . .need to pick my feet up a little more.

“That’s what the preseason is for, to fine tune those little-bitty things.”

Kolb wasn’t sharp to open the game. Until the 80-yard touchdown pass, Kolb had completed just two of eight.

“I think a few of them were just miscommunications,” Kolb said. “That’s going to happen, then you’re going to get on a roll and go 8 for 9. I don’t worry about all that.”

Even though it was only a preseason game, Saturday night was Kolb’s first at University of Phoenix Stadium as a Cardinal.

“It was awesome,” Kolb said. “I think the coaches were a little worried about me early on, in pre-game. They thought I was a little too jacked up. This place is phenomenal, not only the facility, which is overwhelming, but the fans.”

The Cardinals led, 24-17, when Kolb left the game after one possession in the third quarter. The Chargers ended up winning, 34-31, on a touchdown pass with three seconds remaining.

The Cardinals gained 431 yards on offense, although their defense yielded 432.

“A great game on offense,” defensive end Calais Campbell. “I don’t think we’ve looked that good since Kurt Warner was here, so that was exciting.

“On defense, we made some big plays, but I think we gave up, what, 17 points with the (starters)? We can’t do that. I feel like we’re good enough to stop them.”

That’s all the news for today.

Read More: Kevin Kolb (QB – ARI), Brodie Croyle (QB – ARI), Tim Hightower (RB – WAS), Brandon Keith (OT – ARI), John Skelton (QB – ARI), San Diego Chargers, Arizona Cardinals

The preseason game tonight between the Arizona Cardinals and the San Diego Chargers is as close to a regular football game as fans can get in the preseason. Being Week 3 of the preseason, it is typically when teams play their first stringers the longest. The fourth and final game is usually dedicated to the reserves and making final roster decisions.

Such is the case tonight. Kevin Kolb and the first team offense for the Cards are expected to play into the third quarter. With John Skelton out with an ankle sprain, we will get to see Rich Bartel with the second team and the newcomer Brodie Croyle run with the thirds.

Here is what you should be watching for as the two teams play tonight:

Further improvement by Kevin Kolb and the Arizona offense

While Kolb has been okay, the offense has improved from one week to the next. The first team offense, in five series, has scored two field goals on drives over more than 10 plays and got down to the goalline in another (but was unsuccessful at punching the ball into the end zone). Watch to see if the offense can continue to maintain sustained drives. While it is not crucial in the big picture, for fans it will be very good if Kolb can get the team a touchdown or two.

Improved pass blocking from Levi Brown and Brandon Keith

The regular season game last year against the Chargers was when Brandon Keith became a turnstile for Shaun Phillips, who had three sacks in that game. Over the course of the season, it was apparent that Keith and Brown were one of the least effective tackle pairs at protecting their quarterback. Keith made improvements over the course of the season until he went down with an injury, but tonight we will see if they can keep the potent San Diego defense away from the Cardinals’ new quarterback.

Focused running by Beanie Wells

With the trade that sent Tim Hightower to the Washington Redskins and the injury to rookie Ryan Williams, Beanie is now unequivocally “the guy.” The success of the running game begins and ends with him, and that is what he wants. He was criticized for not lowering his shoulder pads and driving forward for tough yards in the preseason opener against the Oakland Raiders, but “ran angry” in last week’s game against the Green Bay Packers. Watch to see if he will continue with that angry intensity while running, looking not only to find holes.and get through them, but also plow through defenders when the holes disappear.

Pass rushing success continued

Against the Green Bay Packers, the first team defense was able to get to Aaron Rodgers. Darnell Dockett and Calais Campbell both had sacks. San Diego typically does a good job of protecting Phillip Rivers, but for the Cardinals to succeed defensively, they must get pressure. O’Brien Schofield had success as well, getting a sack and forcing a fumble as well. He needs to build on last week’s success, as well.

The performance of “bubble” players on the roster

Rosters must be trimmed down to 80 players by August 30 and down to the final 53-man roster by September 3. As a result, players that are question marks need to make an impact now to either make the Cardinals squad or get noticed by other teams looking to add players to their teams late. Who will be those guys? Tune in to the game to see who.

Not much else going on in the NFL world today.

Arizona Cardinals update:

I didn’t get a chance to ask coach Ken Whisenhunt about every player on the roster, but here are his opinions of how a few guys played on Thursday night.

– CB A.J Jefferson started on the left side. “He’s fighting for a shot to play,” Whisenhunt said. “We’re going to rotate all of those guys in the preseason, give them opportunities against different groups we’re facing, just so we have a good sense of where they are. I can tell you this, A.J. responded last night. If he can establish consistency, he’s got a chance to play a lot and really be a good player for us.”

– RB Beanie Wells made a couple of nice runs, Whisenhunt said, including the 15-yarder that he bounced outside and the 5-yard gain he made on first down at the Raiders 8. On that play, TE Todd Heap shifted to the wrong side, leaving a defender unblocked. Wells avoided him by cutting back. Wells also did a good job picking up the blitz, Whisenhunt said.

– OTs Brandon Keith and Levi Brown — They are frequent targets of criticism by fans but Whisenhunt thought they played fairly well, not perfect, but well.

– Offense line as a unit — “We had too many mental mistakes,” Whisenhunt said. “As far as protection went, I thought they did a pretty good job. Oakland has some big guys inside and they can present some matchup problems in protection. Is there room for improvement? Yea, but these five guys who played last night have practiced together.”

– Defensive line — “I was pleased with how active our guys were. I think there’s things to work with there.”

– SS Rashad Johnson was called for pass interference on the game’s first play. He improved after that, Whisenhunt said. It wouldn’t surprise me if Matt Ware makes a push for that job. Johnson has to show more.

– CB Patrick Peterson, the fifth overall pick. Whisenhunt thought Peterson did OK. He didn’t get as much work as some other corners, but will in the coming weeks.

Gotta run!.

At the NFL owners meetings on Friday, the league announced the 32 compensatory picks it awarded NFL teams.

At the NFL owners meetings on Friday, the league announced the 32 compensatory picks it awarded NFL teams. Typically, this is to offset losses via free agency. The Cardinals lost two free agents last offseason as Karlos Dansby signed with the Miami Dolphins and Neil Rackers to the Houston Texans. They signed two free agents, linebacker Paris Lenon and offensive lineman Rex Hadnot.Â

In the NFL Draft next month, the Cardinals will have an additional pick, in the seventh round. Previously, they had no pick in the seventh round, as that choice went to the Jets as part of the deal to acquire Kerry Rhodes. Arizona now has eight picks in the draft. They have one selection in rounds one through five, two in the sixth round (one obtained from the Eagle for Reggie Wells) and now one in the seventh and final round.

Technically, the pick was not compensatory, but the league always grants 32 picks, so the team benefited from that.

Carolina received three and seven teams were granted two picks. In the NFC West, the 49ers received two picks, making their total number of picks now 12 for the draft next month. This puts them in a position to move around and obtain specific players they are targeting.

For those who wonder about the other player signings (Derek Anderson, Joey Porter, Jay Feely, Alan Faneca) and losses (Antrel Rolle) the Cardinals had, they do not count towards compensation, as all these players were released and did not have their contracts expire.

What does this mean? It could mean that with an extra pick in the sixth round (the compensatory pick cannot be traded) that Arizona might use it to move up in the draft to select a targeted player as they have done in the past to draft John Skelton and Alan Branch.Â

The Cardinals have gotten some value out of their seventh round picks. Starting RT Brandon Keith was a seventh rounder, TE Jim Dray was as well and started for the team this past season and rotation and special teams player Kenny Iwebema also was selected in the final round.

Arizona Cardinals update

Extending tender offers to restricted free agents has never meant less than it has this year. No one knows what the free agent rules are going to be under a new CBA, but the tender offer sometimes provides a clue as to how player is viewed by an organization.

The Cardinals tendered seven restricted free agents (those with three through five years of service). WR Steve Breaston was given a first-round tender. Center Lyle Sendlein and guard Deuce Lutui were given second-round tenders.

The other tendered players are receiver Early Doucet, defensive end Alan Branch, right tackle Brandon Keith and running back Tim Hightower. I don’t know at what level they were tendered.

It’s important to note that Breaston, Sendlein, Lutui and Branch could become unrestricted free agents if the new CBA adopts previous rules. Until last year, players needed four years of service to become unrestricted. In 2010, it was was six years. Lutui has played five years. Breaston, Sendlein and Branch each have four.

Hightower, Doucet and Keith each have three years of service and likely will remain restricted under a new CBA.

Some interesting names were among those not tendered: defensive end Kenny Iwebema, fullback Rean Maui’a,  tight ends Ben Patrick and Stephen Spach and cornerbacks Michael Adams and Trumaine McBride.

I expect to see many of those players return, even though they could become unrestricted whenever free agency starts.
