Arizona Cardinals release OL Rex Hadnot, WR Chansi…

by Bob McManaman – Mar. 19, 2012 04:42 PM
The Arizona Republic | azcentral.com

The Cardinals released veteran right guard Rex Hadnot and wide receiver Chansi Stuckey on Monday, clearing a little more than $3 million in salary-cap space in the process.

Hadnot, 30, started all 16 games for the team last season, but he became expendable when Arizona signed 49ers guard/tackle Adam Snyder to a five-year contract on Wednesday.

Stuckey, 29, didn’t see much action last season. He caught 40 passes for 346 yards in 2010 for the Browns, but was held to just four receptions for 39 yards and no touchdowns in 2011 with the Cardinals.

Meanwhile, two free-agent defensive backs were scheduled to visit the club on Monday – Jarrett Bush of the Packers and William Gay of the Steelers. The Cardinals need to add some depth in the secondary and on special teams after losing free agent Richard Marshall to the Dolphins.

Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.

What are Cardinals doing? One indication

What are Cardinals doing? One indication

The earlier item assessing what’s next for Seattle in free agency brought quick responses from Arizona Cardinals fans.

“What’s 1st for Cards?” Gabe asked.

Another, Carmine, was less delicate.

Last we heard, the Cardinals had lost the Peyton Manning sweepstakes, which meant Kevin Kolb won the Arizona lottery — a $7 million bonus enabled by Manning’s withdrawal from consideration.

In response to Gabe and others, I’ve put together what qualifies as an overly detailed report on free-agent defensive back Jarrett Bush, a corner/safety type scheduled to visit the Cardinals, according to Aaron Wilson of scout.com.

The Cardinals will likely need another defensive back after losing versatile veteran corner Richard Marshall to the Miami Dolphins. Bush, who played about a quarter of the defensive snaps for Green Bay last season, is one name to consider.

Unlike Bush, Marshall had been a regular starter for Carolina when the Cardinals signed him last offseason. Marshall started only nine games for Arizona, but he played better than 70 percent of the defensive snaps.

Special teams would be a significant consideration as well.

While Marshall was a regular contributor to the Cardinals in that regard, Bush was a mainstay special-teamer for Green Bay. He challenged Patrick Lee and Ryan Taylor for the most special-teams snaps of any Packer in 2011.

Bush, 27 and an undrafted free agent in 2006, has started five games over the past three seasons, all with Green Bay. He has missed only two games in six NFL seasons, and none since 2007. He’s valued more for his size (6 feet and 200 pounds) than for his speed.

“Bush has good size and athleticism with improved strength, giving him versatility,” the Scouts Inc. report Insider reads in part. “He plays with good instincts and recognition skills to leverage the ball effectively. He can turn and run from a press position, keeping pace against vertical routes.”

Will that get you by, Gabe? What about you, Carmine?

Leave any suggestions in the comment box.

Richard Marshall knew from the onset of free agency he was not a priority to the Arizona Cardinals.

That’s just one reason the Marshall signed a three-year deal worth $16 million with the Miami Dolphins.

“It was difficult decision because I liked Arizona,” Marshall said. “I had fun in Arizona. The fans were great. At the same time I feel like if Arizona wanted to keep me then they would they would of did what they should of did. They told at the beginning of the process I was their number two priority behind Calais (Campbell). Honestly I wasn’t that much of a priority because they were offering me deals less than everybody else was.”

Marshall visited the Dolphins on Wednesday, according to a team spokesman.

Marshall (5-11, 198 pounds) started 9-of-16 games last season with 69 tackles, three interceptions and two sacks. He spent five season with the Carolina Panthers before he joined the Arizona Cardinals last season.

Miami is looking for a corner back for nickel and dime situations to replace Will Allen.

Marshall said he didn’t know how the Dolphins will utilize him, but he’s likely to compete with Nolan Carroll and Jimmy Wilson for playing time.

“It’s an up and coming team,” Marshall said. “The defense is a great, young defense. They played well last year and really it was about the best fit for me as far as defense and then the best move for me and my family.”

Cardinals get visit from free agent guard Jake…

PHOENIX – Offensive guard Jake Scott has made the Arizona Cardinals the first team to visit as a free agent.

Scott met with Cardinals officials and coaches on Wednesday as the team waits for Peyton Manning to decide his destination.

Scott, if he signed with Arizona, would replace Rex Hadnot at right guard, with Hadnot becoming a backup at several offensive line positions.

Scott, 6-foot-5 and 292 pounds, was a teammate of Manning’s on Indianapolis’ Super Bowl championship team in the 2006 season. He started the past four seasons for the Tennessee Titans.

Scott was one of three offensive linemen to visit the Cardinals on Wednesday. One of them, Adam Snyder, later reached an agreement on a five-year contract with Arizona.

Snyder, 6-6 and 325 pounds, started 69 games and appeared in 107 over the past seven seasons for the San Francisco 49ers. He started 13 games for the NFC West champions last season.

The third to visit was the 6-foot-5, 311-pound tackle Demetrius Bell, who started 30 games for the Buffalo Bills over the past three seasons. He started all 16 games for Buffalo in 2010 but was limited to seven games in 2011 because of knee and ankle injuries.

Tackle is the obvious biggest need for Arizona after the Cardinals released Levi Brown, the starter on the left side, in a salary cap move. Last season’s starting right tackle, Brandon Keith, is a free agent.

Scott’s agent, Ken Staninger, said the Cardinals “called right out of the gate” about his client.

“He’s a good fit for what they’re reportedly looking for,” Staninger said.

The agent said that Scott’s history with Manning was “somewhat of a factor.”

The Cardinals are in something of a holding pattern as they wait for Manning to make his decision. The superstar quarterback was visiting the Tennessee Titans on Wednesday.

Manning spent nearly 6 1/2 hours at the Cardinals’ facility on Sunday. The team is hoping the presence of standout receiver Larry Fitzgerald and the quarterback’s friendship with coach Ken Whisenhunt, among other factors, will lure Manning to the desert. The team has a state-of-the-art stadium with a retractable roof and natural grass field as well as warm winter weather.

But a concern could be the offensive line, which was inconsistent in its performances last season. Arizona did go 7-2 after a 1-6 start to wind up 8-8 for the season, thanks in large part to a vastly improved defence.

Manning also visited the Denver Broncos and spent time with the Miami Dolphins’ representatives in a meeting in Indianapolis.

The Cardinals need a decision by Manning this week because the team will have to pay quarterback Kevin Kolb $7 million if he is on the roster on Saturday. Arizona released Brown, the fifth overall pick in the 2007 draft, because his contract would have counted nearly $17 million on the team’s salary cap for the coming season.

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.

Cardinals release OT Brown in salary cap move

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) The Arizona Cardinals have released starting left tackle Levi Brown in a salary cap move.

Brown, who started 75 games in five seasons with Arizona, has a contract that would have counted nearly $17 million against the team’s cap for the coming season. The move was expected regardless of whether the Cardinals are able to lure quarterback Peyton Manning. However, with Brandon Keith a free agent, the team is without both of its starting tackles from last year.

Arizona made Brown the fifth overall player taken in the 2007, selecting the Penn State lineman ahead of running back Adrian Peterson.

The Cardinals could be willing to bring Brown back with a new, smaller contract.

Report: Arizona Peyton Manning’s Next Stop

Free agent quarterback Peyton Manning has left Denver and will now visit with the Arizona Cardinals, according to Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com.

It is still expected that Manning will be signed somewhere in the very near future, as Glazer reported that Manning’s hunt for a new team will be a “fast process.”

Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald told reporters Saturday that he was unsure as to where Manning would end up.

Not much else going on in the NFL world today.

Arizona Cardinals President Michael Bidwill May Or…

Read More: Peyton Manning (QB – IND), Reggie Wayne (WR – IND), Indianapolis Colts, Arizona Cardinals

With Peyton Manning now a free agent, the Arizona Cardinals are reportedly one of a dozen or so teams that have interest in the free agent quarterback. After the press conference in Indianapolis on Wednesday in which Manning and Colts owner Jim Irsay addressed the press about Manning’s release, he immediately flew back to South Florida where he has a home and has been working out with former teammate receiver Reggie Wayne.

Local reporter Jude Lacava reported Thursday evening that Arizona Cardinals president Michael Bidwill had taken his plane to South Florida. That would be to obviously meet with Manning.

There were conflicting reports, though. Darren Urban had heard nothing of the trip and Arizona Republic Cardinals beat writer Kent Somers tweeted that he had heard that Bidwill was in Tempe Tursdya afternoon with a function to attend on Friday, so if he in fact did make the trip, it was a very, very short one.

Did this mysterious trip happen? Surely the truth will come out at some point, but these are the types of reports that will be all over in the meantime.
